Ancient Egyptian Epigraphy puts the student in front of the inscribed hieroglyphic documents and monuments of ancient Egypt, in their concrete reality as written artifacts, which depends on media, materials, scribal schools, style, dating. The course will be organized in off-site lessons in museums and lessons in class at Pisa.
Object of the course will be the study of documents / monuments preserved in Italian ancient Egyptian collections (mainly at the Egyptian Museums of Florence and Turin), chosen by students individually or in groups during the off-site lessons. The documents / monuments will be copied live by the students during the lessons in the museum/s and then read and analyzed in class.
A good knowledge of Middle Egyptian language and hieroglyphic writing, as well as Ancient Egyptian history and culture, is required.
